| VIETNAMESE VTOPIA FONT FOR MACINTOSH |
+----------------------------------------+
______________
_INTRODUCTION_
This package contains the TrueType font "Vtopia" for Vietnamese text
processing and desktop publishing on a Macintosh computer. It can be
used by itself or with other fonts that are already installed.
Vtopia(^tm) comes in four styles -- Regular, Italic, Bold, and Bold
Italic -- and is based on Adobe Systems' Utopia(^tm) font, designed
by Robert Slimbach and available from Adobe Systems and in the Free
Software Foundation's GNU distribution.
This package also contains the keyboard layout "VN 2", to enable
typing Vietnamese characters into the computer. This keyboard layout
coexists with others on your system.
[An analogous version exists for use with FrameMaker on X-Window.]

_ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS_
The adapter of Utopia into Vtopia wishes to thank Robert Slimbach of
Adobe Systems, William H Kienzel of Xerox Corporation, Ngo Thanh Nhan
of NYU Linguistic String Project, and many others, for their valuable
and meticulous comments which have led to crucial improvements in the
design of all the Vtopia styles -- particularly with respect to the
design and placement of the additional Vietnamese diacritics, in
order to be faithful to the spirit and feel of the original font.

_INSTALLATION_
Open the folder "Drop contents on System folder", and drop its
contents onto the System _folder_ in your Macintosh. The Mac system
software will automatically places the individual files in the
appropriate places -- this works best if your Mac runs System 7.1.

_TYPING VIETNAMESE CHARACTERS_
[This section assumes familiarity with the Vietnamese alphabet and
characters; for more details on this topic, please refer to the
article: 'A proposal for Vietnamese character encoding standards in a
unified text processing framework' by James Do, Ngo Thanh Nhan,
Nguyen Hoang, in "Computer Standards & Interfaces" 14 (1992) 3-12.]
First, invoke the "Keyboard" Control Panel, and select the "VN 2"
keyboard. Second, switch your font to Vtopia. Now, you are ready to
type in Vietnamese!
The keyboard layout that you now have is a modified QWERTY keyboard
layout to accommodate the Vietnamese alphabet and tone marks, as
follows:
QWERTY 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 [ ]
VN 2 a< a> e> dd \! \? \" \' \. o> u* o*
VN 2 <shift> A< A> E> DD O> U* O*
VN 2 <option> 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 [ ]
VN 2 <option><shift> ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) { }
with <...> representing a key on the keyboard layout, and with this
ASCII mnemonic notation:
A< A with breve
A> A with circumflex
DD D with stroke
E> E with circumflex
O> O with circumflex
O* O with horn
U* U with horn
\! grave tone mark
\? hook above tone mark
\" tilde tone mark
\' acute tone mark
\. dot below tone mark
To type the Vietnamese characters with a tone mark, first type the
tone mark, followed by the vowel. For example, type:
<hook above tone mark><A>
to produce the character:
A with hook above
and:
<hook above tone mark><A with circumflex>
to give:
A with circumflex and hook above
NOTE: If a software application does not accept certain character
codes, the corresponding characters with double diacritics may need
to be typed in this order: <vowel><tone mark><space> .

_TECHNICAL DIGRESSION_
Vtopia uses the Vietnamese national standard TCVN 5712:1993 (VSCII),
where "VSCII" -- rhymes with "ASCII" -- stands for "Vietnamese
Standard Code for Information Interchange".
The keyboard layout for "VN 2" corresponds to one of the proposals for
the Vietnamese national standard keyboard. This is a current work
item of TCVN/TC1 -- the Vietnamese national standards committee's
Technical Committee on Information Technology -- which is located at:
39, Tran Hung Dao, Ha Noi, Viet Nam.
The technically adventurous, who desire a more elegant management of
multiple keyboard layouts, could experiment with the "Outboard
Keyboard" system extension in James W Walker's CarpetBag package,
widely available from the regular Macintosh archives on the Internet.
